New Mizuno MP-59 Irons
With the release of the new Mizuno MP-59 irons, Mizuno uses titanium for a completely different purpose—forgiveness.
While the MP-59 is made from steel, 12 grams of titanium are forged into a pocket behind the face of each club. (It's the slightly darker material in the photo above.) Mizuno says the titanium allows the clubs to maintain the ideal amount of thickness behind the impact area for solid feel while automatically redistributing the weight to the heel, toe and sole of the club.
"The more you push the weight out to the perimeter and the thinner you make it in the middle, there's a trade-off with feel," says David Llewellyn, research and development manager for Mizuno USA. "But by using a lower density material we can maintain thickness here and build in a little bit of forgiveness."
The heads of the MP-59 irons are slightly smaller than last season's MP-58, the first irons released with this feature that Mizuno calls Ti Muscle. Bo Van Pelt Leads Asia Pacific Classic
SELANGOR, Malaysia (AP) — Bo Van Pelt shot a 4-under 67 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over fellow Indiana player Jeff Overton after the third round of the Asia Pacific Classic.
Van Pelt, the winner of the PGA Tour's 2009 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, had a 16-under 197 total at The Mines in the second-year event sanctioned by the PGA Tour and Asian Tour.
"I just love to play to compete," Van Pelt said "It's not about the money. That's what gets my juices flowing. Like my grandpa always told me, 'You can't take it with you.'
"Obviously, any time you're near the lead with 18 to go, you're excited. That's why we practice and why we enter tournaments. That's all you can ask for, to have a chance to win on Sunday. It's exciting, and I'm looking forward to it. It's been a while since I won a golf tournament, so it would be great."
Overton, tied for second-round lead with Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson after a course-record 62, had a 69.
"It wasn't my day on the greens," Overton said "Didn't make anything."

Luke Donald wins US money list with Disney Classic victory
Britain's Luke Donald clinched the PGA Tour money list title with victory at the Disney Classic in Florida.
The world number one played a magnificent back nine which included six birdies on the way to a 64.
Donald's chances looked far from certain with a bogey six on the eighth but his round came alive on the back nine.
Playing partner and PGA money list rival Webb Simpson finished the tournament four shots behind Donald.
The triumph means Englishman Donald is on course to become the first player to top the money lists in both the United States and Europe.
In Europe the 33-year-old leads by over £1m, but there are eight events left and he will be missing some because his wife Diane is expecting their second child in the next fortnight.
Donald had to win the Florida tournament or finish second to top the money list. It did not look a certainty with eight holes to play as Donald, Simpson, Billy Mayfair and Justin Leonard trailed 15-under-par tournament leader Kevin Chappell by one stroke.
Donald then started playing majestic golf with consecutive birdies on 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
He took sole lead of the tournament on the 14th and strengthened his position with an extraordinary 45-foot putt on 15.
His form appeared to put Simpson off his stroke. The 26-year-old American, three under for the front nine, found himself making pars rather than birdies down the home stretch.
Donald, born in Hemel Hempstead, parred 16, 17 and 18 to card his 64 and finish 17 under par.
"I didn't play the Ping G20 Irons fives well," the Englishman said. "But what better time to go on a run than the final round back nine when everything was on the line?
"I wasn't too happy with my swing earlier in the week but it's nice to do it under pressure. All credit to [coach] Pat Goss and the good team I have around me.
"It's been a tremendous year for me. I answered a lot of critics' questions coming here knowing I had to win, and doing it."

Westwood would like to see Asian-Pacific major created
World No. 2 Lee Westwood thinks men's golf should create a new major in the Asia-Pacific region. The 38-year-old Englishman made the suggestion despite being a supporter of the history behind the four events that currently make up the highlights of the golf season.
"I like the tradition of the majors. I think the men's game has got it pretty much right, although I'd like to see another major somewhere else in the world. Somewhere like Asia or Australia," said Westwood, who will be playing in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions -- Asia's one truly world-class tournament -- in Shanghai in November.
The HSBC Champions was added to the World Golf Championships schedule in 2009, marking the first time one of the global series had been staged outside the United States since 2006. Like many of the European golfers, Westwood fully supported that move and believes the elite group of events should play an even bigger part in the growing internationalization of the sport.
"The World Golf Championships should move around and encapsulate the whole world because it's in the title of the tournaments," the Englishman said. "They should be played by players from all over the world and be played all over the world. China's an emerging market for golf; there's so many courses being built, people taking up the sport and people getting interested in the sport.
"It's somewhere that World Golf Championships have got to be played because it could turn into such a dominant force. Last year's event was great. Myself and Francesco (Molinari) ran away from the field. It probably looked good on TV and that sort of thing gets people interested. The more tournaments there are played there the more interest there will be.
Westwood finished one shot short of adding a win in Shanghai to a record that includes wins everywhere from Australia, through Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Dubai as well as in golf's traditional heartlands.
"I see the way that the Asian economy and markets have supported golf over the last few years and they deserve to have big tournaments there," he said. "Asian golf is getting bigger isn't it? Asia seems to be one of the places that hasn't been hit so hard by the financial crisis. Europe and America have been nailed really, so Asia's going to be looking more healthy. Sponsors are more likely to want to put money into sporting events there because they've got it."
Westwood's comments came after the LPGA was reported to have considered Asia as the location for the fifth Major they were creating this year, before eventually deciding to bestow the honour on the Evian Masters in France.

Captains reveal Presidents Cup picks
Greg Norman and Fred Couples revealed their 2011 Presidents Cup picks via a press conference call on Tuesday evening.
International captain Norman pleased the home fans by selecting Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley, while US captain Couples opted for Tiger Woods and the new FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas.
The two-time major champion Norman believes the decision to go with home blood will give the Internationals the edge when the biennial clash tees off at Royal Melbourne on November 17.
“Robert and Aaron are so excited and they can’t wait to get down there,” said Norman, who will be looking to regain the Presidents Cup for his side for the first time since 1998 at the same venue, Royal Melbourne.
“The environment is going to be so enthusiastic, especially with five Australians on the side. We also have a very strong southern hemisphere feel to the team with the likes of South African trio Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen. The balance of my team looks very simplified in terms of pairings.
“But the Australians want to put the record straight for the International side and win a second Presidents Cup in their back yard, that’s for sure.”
Allenby, who is a member of Royal Melbourne Golf Club, echoed Norman’s sentiments.
“Playing at Royal Melbourne will be one of the biggest highlights of my career,” said Allenby, who will be competing in his sixth Presidents Cup.
“Melbourne is my favourite course in the world and I love it there. We have an extremely strong side and some of the guys are in really good form right now. The crowd will be key for us and I’m going to give the week 12 billion per cent.”
Meanwhile, Couples, who had already confirmed Woods’ appearance several weeks ago, admitted his final wildcard pick evolved around Haas and US PGA champion Keegan Bradley - with the former getting the nod.
“Bill simply got the pick because he won the Tour Championship,” confirmed the 1992 Masters champion Couples.
“Had he lost the playoff to Hunter Mahan, then Keegan Bradley would have likely got the spot.”
Not that Haas needed any more good news following his $11.4 million pay day at East Lake on Sunday, yet he gratefully received the call with open arms.
“I am honoured to be on the US team,” said three-time PGA Tour champion Haas, who is son of America’s vice captain, Jay.
“It’s a very special moment as it’s something I worked for at the beginning of the year. Fred has been someone I’ve looked up to and has been a good friend of my dad’s for a long time. I can’t wait to get down to Melbourne and compete in my first Presidents Cup match.”

Unique TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB Irons
Okay, so this one isn't totally forged. Instead, the multi-material Tour Preferred cavity back iron combines a cast body with a forged face in order to take advantage of the forgiveness of a deep cavity back cast club, while retaining the superb feel of a forged iron.
The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB Irons is the only model that can be purchased with graphite shafts, though the standard is the new, lightweight 110-gram True Temper Dynamic Gold XP steel shaft. Not only is this new shaft considerably lighter than the standard Dynamic Gold, it also promotes a higher ball flight. As mentioned, there is a graphite shaft option which comes custom for this set from Fujikura. Two flex profiles will be available, a 90-gram stiff flex and an 80-gram regular flex.
The TP CB irons have a thin topline, but the widest sole of the three new forged irons, as well as the most offset and slightly stronger lofts. Still, at their friendliest, the clubs would be classified as game-improvement irons. Experience on Playing Taylormade R11 Fairway Wood
I bought the R11 Fairway Wood last week. The white club head did not bother me at all. Just gets dirty real easy . It launches higher than I thought it would , so time to tinker. I had it set on standard, time to lower it to see if it really helps. I can feel the shaft load, I can feel the head through out my swing.

Nick Dougherty shoots 8-under 63
CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland -- Nick Dougherty shot an 8-under 63 Thursday to lead Rory McIlroy by two shots after the first round of the European Masters.
The Englishman had eight birdies in a bogey-free round, while McIlroy had five birdies in his first eight holes. It's McIlroy's first tournament since injuring his right wrist three weeks ago.
"It's totally fine," McIlroy said. "I'm able to hit all the shots I want to and not lose any distance."
Martin Kaymer, Lee Sung and Gary Boyd also were two shots behind the leader. Kaymer had seven birdies and just one bogey.
McIlroy showed no ill effects from the injury he sustained after hitting a tree root during the PGA Championship. He spent two weeks spent recuperating in the United States with his girlfriend, top-ranked tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.
"It's a great way to start the week," said McIlroy, the U.S. Open winner who can rise to No. 3 in the rankings with a victory. "I'm sixth and I want to get higher."
McIlroy's steady round took off with birdie putts of 3 feet and 20 feet at No. 2 and No. 3. His only blemish was a 5 at the fourth hole after hooking his tee shot into trees. But he recovered with a 12-footer on the next hole, then made a 14-foot, downhill putt for birdie at the sixth.
Second-ranked Lee Westwood and British Open winner Darren Clarke were in a group of six players at 4 under. Westwood's adventurous round included two eagles and a double bogey. He missed short par-saving putts at each of the final two holes.

It features a factory-installed weight screw in the sole that helps move the center of gravity deeper and allows for a more precise swingweight. It can also be used with a variety of customizable shafts, giving the user a very confident feeling that allows them to make the club their own.
The Titleist 909 F3 Fairway Wood features a compact, pear-shaped profile and a deep face that produce mid launch with low spin. A modern shape with a Tour-proven profile creates a deeper CG (center of gravity) for added stability while the large, long face provides confidence and forgiveness.

The Ping K15 Hybrid is designed as a compliment to the K15 irons, the K15 hyrbid allows you to pptimize your set to improve your ball flight, and build consistency in your game. This hybrid replaces harder-to-hit long irons, and relies on a patent-pending design that creates lower-spinning, higher-launching shots that fly straighter and longer. Cold air is heavy, therefore it creates more resistance to the flight of the ball. Cold, heavier winds naturally encourage golfers to swing harder, which will create more errors.
It will cause you to be out of position through impact, allowing your right side to dominate (for right golfers) at the inappropriate time. By having a more reckless swing to counteract the cooler weather, this action will move your right arm and shoulder out of the desired position. This will force the club head to approach the ball in a too steep angle. In golf talk: "coming over the top of the ball."
Because of the colder temperatures, all players should gear their swings to produce a lower trajectory to the flight of the ball. To accomplish this, the swing plane (path that the club travels) should be in a shallower arc. This will allow the club head to contact the ball properly. Also, play the ball slightly back in your stance.
One of the essential keys is to have your shoulders set up correctly at address. Having your shoulders in the proper position will encourage good shoulder motion throughout your swing. In the set-up (starting position), the right shoulder should be slightly lower than the left, with the right arm relaxed and the elbow gently tucked. From this position, the right allows the left to control the takeaway. Remember the left leads, and the right follows.
A very common error is that the right shoulder is too high through the hitting area. A simple, quick fix is to not allow your right shoulder to pass the ball. This will encourage you to come into the ball with more of an uppercut type blow (much like a boxer), as opposed to a roundhouse spinning motion that is too hard to time up consistently.

Wow! Astonishing Titleist 910F fairway wood
I bought this club last week, took it out for a spin on Sunday in my club. A bit scared to use it for fear of idiot marks due to the shallow crown (to whit - my OCD personality). However, after babying the club for the first 8 holes I got to the monster par 4 9th (400mtrs ++). Hit a scorcher of a drive for severely uphill hole in 4 degrees celsius.

Introducing the PING G20 family
We all saw Tom Lewis bounding down the fairways of Royal St George’s with his PING emblazoned cap and bag – and the GM inbox was inundated with requests to know what he was using.
Well, we answered it in the way of an In the Bag article – and now, on the strength of Tour players’ enthusiasm for the new family and Anser Milled putters, PING have launched the G20 range to the public. Headline act? The G20 driver (left), already in the bag of Bubba Watson, Ángel Cabrera and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
“There’s a lot of new technology in the entire G20 family,” said PING chairman and CEO John Solheim.
“Our engineers optimised the clubs to fit and benefit golfers of all skill levels.
“In the driver, we’re using for the first time a titanium alloy called Ti 8-1-1, which allows us to improve the weighting to better optimise the entire clubhead. When combined with our new, proprietary high-balance-point shaft, our testing shows significant improvements in energy transfer, which leads to longer, straighter drives.
“The irons are more forgiving and feature a cavity design that includes an elastomer badge for improved feel. The fairway woods and hybrids offer golfers high-launching, forgiving options from all conditions.”
But it's not all about the G20. Also new to the family are the Anser wedge, Anser Milled putters and Sydney putter. Various Anser Milled putters – seven models in all – are in the bags of PING pros Hunter Mahan, Angel Cabrera, Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen, Heath Slocum and others. With the Anser Milled Series, PING updates the original Anser design of company founder Karsten Solheim.
The new designs, all precision-milled from 303 stainless steel, offer various hosel configurations to match specific stroke types and feature intricate design details to build upon the performance that has contributed to more than 500 tour wins and 26 major victories since 1966.
PING have also introduced its ‘Fit for Stroke’ putter fitting concept. Every PING putter is balanced to fit a stroke type: straight, slight arc or strong arc. Each putter will include a shaft label indicating its matching stroke type.
Extensive player and robot testing have offered overwhelming proof that when a golfer’s putter balance matches their stroke type, their consistency improves and they make more putts.
